Mackerel fishing trips

Three-hour

deep sea fishing trips

  • What time do your trips leave?

We have two boats that go mackerel fishing. There are no fixed times for departing. We leave when we have enough passengers. We usually start around 10 a.m. and go on all day until around 5.30 p.m.

  • How much do the trips cost?

The price for adults is £9 and for children of fifteen years old or under it’s £6.

  • What type of payment do you accept?

Cash or cheque (made out to Harry May) only please. There are two places down at the Cobb that have ATMs. Please phone Harry on 07974 753287 for locations.

  • Where do we meet?

We meet at the end of the Cobb. The Cobb begins at The Lifeboat Station. Continue to the Marine Aquarium and carry on to the harbour entrance, where the boats enter and leave the harbour. Meet by the steps at the end.

  • What about fishing tackle? We don’t have any.

The price includes all fishing gear. We use hand lines for mackerel fishing, one line between two people. This saves tangles and is better for everyone.

  • What if I and my family have never done this before?

Don’t worry. The skipper will show you exactly what to do and how to detect a mackerel when it’s on your hook.

  • Is there an age limit on your boats?

Absolutely not, we take babes in arms and their great grandparents. On most trips there is room for a pushchair. There is no upper age limit but you need to be able to look after yourself on board especially if the sea is a bit choppy.

  • Do you carry life jackets?

We certainly do and anyone can ask for a life jacket at any time.

  • What happens if we have booked a trip and its too rough to go out?

The skipper will cancel the trip and no monies will be owed.

  • How can we gut our fish when we don’t know how and we have no suitable knives?

Just ask the skipper during the trip and he will prepare your catch for the barbecue.

  • How can I keep my catch cold if I want to go to the beach or have a meal after my trip?

We have an arrangement with the local fish shop at the Cobb and they will keep your mackerel good and cold until 5 p.m.

  • Can I have my catch cooked for me straight off the boat?

Yes. The Beach House Café will cook your catch for you. Please ask about this on board.

  • Can you show me how to gut or fillet my mackerel?

Just ask and the skipper will give you a demonstration.

  • How do you recommend cooking my mackerel

Take a look at some of these recipes.

  • How do I find Lyme Regis harbour?

If you have satnav the postcode is DT7 3JJ. If not please ask the skipper when enquiring about the trip.

  • Can I bring my dog with me?

We are dog friendly and welcome them on board.

  • How many people do you carry?

Both boats are licensed to carry 10 passengers.

  • Where do I park?

Drive down Cobb Road to the bottom, bear right and there is ample car parking on either side of the road. Remember £1 coins for the meter.

  • Can I hire the boat just for my party?

Yes just phone Harry on 07974 753287 to plan your trip.

  • How do I book?

You can book a deep sea fishing trip before the event by phoning Harry on 07974 753287.It is very important that you phone at 7pm the night before to check the weather conditions and to confirm that the trip is going ahead.

  • How long are the trips?

Our boat leaves Lyme Regis at 8.30 a.m. and returns at 11.30 a.m.

  • How much does the trip cost?

The three hour deep sea fishing trip costs £25 per person including rod and bait.

  • Where do we meet?

We meet at the end of the Cobb at 8.20am. The Cobb begins at The Lifeboat Station. Continue to the Marine Aquarium and carry on to the harbour entrance, where the boats enter and leave the harbour. Meet by the steps at the end.

  • What might we catch?

Whiting, pollack, bream, mackerel, dogfish, gurnards and sometimes skate and conger eels.

  • What life saving gear do you carry?

We carry all life saving equipment and life jackets are available on request.

  • Am I too old or too young to go deep sea fishing?

In our experience children under five years old rarely enjoy being at sea for three hours but if you are up for it, you may love it at 85!

  • Can I come on a trip if I’m in a wheelchair?

We have a lock up shed at the end of the Cobb where your wheelchair can be stored during a trip. If it’s possible we can lift lighter wheelchairs onto the boat but it is easier if the passenger can walk down a few steps and onto the boat. We have a bench seat on the boat.

We are dog friendly and welcome them on board.
