Fireworks and Floyd - the perfect Carnival combination

The climax of this year’s Carnival and Regatta was the spectacular firework display set to the music of Pink Floyd and their incredible track ‘Comfortably Numb’ sponsored by Harry May Boat Trips. Harry commented immediately after the event: “It was a stunning display I will never forget. Pink Floyd and fireworks, the perfect combination.”

Harry organised a powerful sound system out on Harbour North Wall alongside the fireworks so everyone could see every firework and hear every note wherever they were standing or sitting along the sea front or in the gardens.

Quoted in the Carnival programme, Harry said: “I would like this song played for my family, all the boatmen I have known over the years and for the hundreds and hundreds of passengers we carry and to say ‘thank you’ to everyone I have net doing the best job in the world.”

Carnival fireworksThe last time fireworks and ‘Comfortably Numb’ were heard and seen together was in November 2005 and people still talk about it. Voted by Pink Floyd fans as their number one track, it is hard not to be moved by this music. It was voted number 314 in Rolling Stone magazine’s greatest songs of all time. ‘Comfortably Numb’ first appeared on the 1979 double album, ‘The Wall’. Writing credits are shared between Roger Waters and David Gilmour. The melody and most of the music was written by Gilmour while Waters contributed the lyrics and some additional notes.   Photo courtesy of Michael Schmitz.
