Is that a white horse in the waves?

The uncanny shape of a large white horse jumping over the Cobb Wall was captured by Richard Austin, Lyme’s renowned local photographer with a national reputation, on Friday 3rd January. The photo was picked up by several national newspapers including the Daily Mail and the Western Gazette.

White horse over the CobbAs we endure the worst series of winter storms in two decades, this astonishing photograph was captured right here in Lyme Regis. But Richard revealed he did not realise what he had taken until it was pointed out to him by other people on Facebook.

"It’s one of those shots you can either see a horse or you can't,” he said. “The great thing about it was that the sun was out for a little while and that makes a difference. I put this on my Facebook page for people to look at and somebody sent me a message saying you realise that is a white horse jumping over the Cobb Wall. I looked and suddenly thought I could see a horse.”

He added that five years ago he captured a wave coming over the Cobb Wall that resembled Neptune, the Roman god of freshwater and the sea. Richard, who has been a photographer for 30 years, said the photo had gone viral on Twitter and been ‘retweeted everywhere'. To see more of Richard Austin’s storm photos, click here.

Clearly, this was not a day to undertake a Lyme Regis mackerel fishing trip with Harry!
