Kingfisher sighting in Lyme Regis harbour

This is a picture I have hoped to get for quite a while. It shows a kingfisher perched on the outhaul ropes in Lyme Regis harbour and was taken by Mike Higgs of the harbour staff.

KingfisherFor those of us that are ever watchful for birds, the sight of a kingfisher ranks very highly. That flash of turquoise blue skimming across the water is a sight to savour and I have seen that flash several times this year.

Around the beginning of October, while tied up right at the end of the Cobb waiting for a party to arrive to go fishing, I saw that flash of blue coming out of the harbour mouth before turning to land on the eastern side of the North Wall below the middle cannon.

It perched on the wall for a few minutes before diving three times into the water and going back to the same bit of rock. At that time there were thousands of whitebait in the water, an easy meal. There are quite a few turnstones and the ever present rock pipits on the Cobb everyday, extremely used to people and only flying away at the last moment.

Harry May Boat Trips will be returning in the Spring with their ever popular Lyme Regis mackerel fishing and Lyme Regis deep sea fishing trips.
