Lyme Regis’ worst gales for many, many years

This photo was taken at the height of the worst gales to hit Lyme Regis for many, many years. The date is February 5th 2014. In the picture there are three things that are different from the day before.

Any ideas? Have a good look.

The light on the end of the Cobb has gone – that has never ever happened before.

High tide on 6th Feb Jude BriscoeThe beacon post on the end of the outer line of rock armour that does so much to protect Lyme Regis has gone and when I went to bed last night there were three cannons on the North Wall but this morning there were only two.

The last twelve hours have seemed like the end of the world. We are light years away from Lyme Regis mackerel fishing and Lyme Regis deep sea fishing trips from the harbour. Harry May Boat Trips seems like a dream.

Last night and for most of the day we have been hit by force 10 (storm), force 11 (violent storm) and force 12 (hurricane) winds on the Beaufort Wind Scale. Everyone has heard the shipping forecast but rarely heard these numbers.

When will it end? Certainly not during this month.
