Rare catch off Lyme Regis

A rare Atlantic bonito weighing 6lbs was caught off Lyme Regis in September.

When Tony Russell launched his boat in Lyme Regis harbour on Saturday 15th September his plan was to catch a few bass out at the East Tennents, a fishing mark four and a half miles south of Lyme Regis. In fact what he caught was a fantastic looking 6lb Atlantic bonito which was armed with a very fine set of teeth. This will probably be one of the very few bonitos caught on a rod round the coast of Britain this year.

Tony Russell with the bonito70 year old Tony from Bristol said " As soon as he struck, he went off like a bullet to at least 100 metres from the boat. I thought it was a massive bass at first. He never stopped fighting for twenty minutes. I wasn't completely sure what species the fish was but I had it confirmed when I arrived back in Lyme Regis.”

Atlantic bonitoHarry May, one of the local boatmen, commented that he’d been fishing from Lyme Regis for forty two years and had never heard of anyone catching one of these fish on a rod before. Harry added, "It would be wonderful if these beautiful fish started appearing regularly off our coast and we caught them while on a Lyme Regis deep sea fishing trip."

The fish was sold to Steve Postles of the Jurassic Restaurant for £25 and the money was donated to the Lyme Regis lifeboat.
