Safety first and tight lines from John Bell

I service and repair sea survival equipment such as the life jackets for Harry May's boats and have been in the trade for thirty years. The Marie F and Sunbeam carry the life jackets stowed away ready for use in emergencies but fortunately hardly any of his mackerel fishing or deep sea fishing customers will have ever seen them. It's my job to make sure that all the survival equipment is professionally serviced once a year.

I clearly remember the first time I met Harry May. It was a beautifully sunny but cold morning in November 2005. For my birthday, my wife had booked a catch and cook day with River Cottage's Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstal and Harry was the skipper that day. I’d never fished before and Harry showed me the ropes. What a gentleman he was and how very patient! That was seven years ago and I've never looked back.

John Bell's mackerel fishing tripI now go on regular mackerel and deep sea fishing trips with Harry. I always love the fun-filled one hour mackerel fishing trips and enjoy just as much the deep sea trips when we catch a wider variety of species. On top of the fishing, I really enjoy the Lyme Regis ambience especially the walk along the Cobb. What a super place!

So when you’re enjoying a Lyme Regis mackerel fishing trip or a deep sea fishing trip on board one of Harry's boats and you see the sign ‘Lifejackets stowed here’, you can rest assured that they have all been serviced by me. And if  you see me in Lyme Regis in my red Triumph Herald give me a wave.

Tight lines!
John Bell
