Sunbeam skipper Matt Stiles - from Bucks to boats

Matt Stiles is our very popular twenty three year old skipper of Sunbeam, one of Harry May’s two boats for Lyme Regis mackerel fishing and deep sea fishing trips.

Matt Stiles' wherryMatt didn’t know just how much his life would change when he left his home in Bucks to pursue his love for sailing and woodwork at the Boat Building Academy near Lyme Regis’ harbour  A member of the class of 2008 and the youngest student on this eight month course, Matt further developed his carpentry skills to build a stunning-looking 20ft Joel White Bangor Packet rowing wherry. He passed the course with merit.

When the course ended Matt was intending to work in the boat building business but very soon afterwards met Harry May whose two boats — Marie F and Sunbeam — were out of the water during the winter months for their all-important maintenance. Immediately recognising Matt’s skills, in no time at all Harry came up with a long list of jobs for Matt to do.

Matt already had most of the courses needed to run a passenger carrying boat. (He was a fully qualified RYA Dinghy Instructor.) It seemed to follow on naturally the following Easter when the season was under way, that Matt started to learn the noble art of being a mackerel fishing skipper.

The years have rolled by and Matt is now a vital part of Harry May Boat Trips. Most mornings you’ll see Matt leaving Lyme Regis harbour at 8.30 a.m. for the daily deep sea fishing trip and many fishermen and women regularly return for repeat outings with their children. While Harry has been taking passengers out on Lyme Regis mackerel fishing and Lyme Regis deep sea fishing trips for forty two years, Matt adds a new and very important youthful element. As well as contributing his skills in maintaining the boats and keeping them up to scratch, Matt is a very welcome team player and vital cog in the works.
