The Belem pays a Bank Holiday visit to Lyme Regis

The Belem, a beautiful, three masted barque arrived off Lyme Regis harbour at around 5.30 pm on May Day Bank Holiday Monday. Thanks to Wikipedia for the following information:

BelemBuilt in France in 1896 for trading, she crossed the Atlantic 33 times between 1896 and 1913 carrying mainly cocoa, run and sugar. In 1914, the Duke of Westminster bought her, fitted engines and sailed round the world.

The history of this vessel is incredible and it's well worth Googling 'Belem ship' and then clicking on 1896-1900 Belem's history. You'll find loads of detail here but, in particular, the story of the mules is heart wrenching stuff.

If you want to get out to sea yourself then book one of Harry's Lyme Regis mackerel fishing or Lyme Regis deep sea fishing trips by calling 07974 753287.
