What a difference a year makes

This beautiful photo was taken by Judith Biscoe in the first week of 2017. It shows a very calm sea with no or very little wind blowing at all. Now compare this with the autumn and winter of 2015/16 when we hardly had a day without strong winds or severe gales.

Calm 2017 sea at LR

 Stormy sea 2016

This flat calm weather has persisted throughout this winter, day after day, week after week. All the boats involved in commercial fishing that stay in the water all the year, whatever their size, have been able to go out almost daily. They've been able to haul crab and lobster pots, gather in nets they laid the day before, pull up whelk pots, go trawling or fish for bass by rod and line.

Compare this with last winter when no one went to sea more than one day a week from October until the end of February. There were some very broke fishermen and tons of lost crab and whelk pots.

Before long it will be Spring again and Harry May fishing trips will be setting out from the harbour offering locals and visitors Lyme Regis mackerel fishing trips and Lyme Regis deep sea fishing trips.
